Hill tribe; "mountain folk" is a term used for all of the ethnic groups who inhabit the high mountainous Northern and Western regions of Thailand; including both sides of the border areas between Northern Thailand, Laos, and Burma in the Phi Pan Nam Mountain Range, the Thanon Mountain Range and the Tenasserim Hills. These areas are known for their mountainous
terrain; covered in thick heavily deforestation jungles.

The "Hill Tribes" include; the Yao, Karen, Ahka, Lisu, Mien, Lahu, Hmong and the "Long Neck;" Palaung tribes; who primarily are subsistence farmers; using slash-and-burn agricultural techniques to farm in dense forest communities. A popular perception is slash and burn practices are environmentally destructive. The governments of Thailand, Laos, and Burma; all bordering on the "Golden Triangle;" who are concerned with security and population density, have caused those governments to forcibly relocate many hill tribes.

Traditionally, hill tribes are migratory; without passports or the right to own land, move over borders, leaving land depleted of natural resources. Cultural and adventure travel tourism to Hill Tribe villages is an increasing source of income for the tribes,
though that business is often ethically debated.

Quoting from a 2013 article in The Bangkok Post: "Nearly a million hill tribe people, and forest dwellers, are treated as outsiders and criminals, since most live in protected forests. Viewed as national security threats, hundreds of thousands of tribal people have been
refused citizenship by governments, though they are are natives to the land."
