AND PHOTOGRAPHS |
NOT IN THE GREAT ART CREATED IN THE MEDIUM, BUT RATHER IN THE CAMERAS AND MATERIALS WHICH PROCEEDED THE EVENTUAL ACCEPTANCE OF PHOTOGRAPHY AS FINE ART. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ARTWORK PRODUCED IN THE PHOTOGRAPHIC MEDIUM IS AN EFFORT REALIZED IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. HOWEVER THE ADVENT OF PHOTOGRAPHY, SEVERAL HUNDRED YEARS EARLIER, HAS LEFT LITTLE IF ANY EXCEPTIONAL IMAGERY. HISTORICAL CAMERAS AND PHOTOGRAPHIC HARDWARE, ON THE OTHER HAND, HAVE HAD A FAR RICHER LEGACY. THE MEDIUMS' LONGEVITY IS BASED IN THE CRAFTSMANSHIP OF THE VINTAGE CAMERAS, MAGIC LANTERNS, AND STEREOSCOPIC PROJECTORS; WHICH CAN BE VIEWED AS AN ORIGINAL ART FORM, WITHIN THE MEDIUM OF PHOTOGRAPHY ITSELF. THIS CONCISE EXHIBITION, OF VINTAGE CAMERAS AND PHOTOGRAPHS, IS AN EXPLICIT PRESENTATION OF FINE 19TH AND EARLY 20TH CENTURY PHOTOGRAPHIC MATERIAL. THE EXAMPLES OF VICTORIAN PORTRAITURE, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THIS VAST COLLECTION OF ANTIQUE PHOTOGRAPHIC HARDWARE, SETS THE STAGE FOR COMPREHENDING THE EVOLUTION WHICH GAVE BIRTH TO MODERN FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY. THE CHANCE TO SEE SUCH AN ARRAY OF UNUSUAL CAMERAS AND PHOTOGRAPHIC MATERIALS, PRESENTED SO COHESIVELY, IS DEFINITELY RARE. THIS EXHIBITION HOWEVER, MAKES IT POSSIBLE, FOR EVERYONE INTERESTED IN ANY AREA OF PHOTOGRAPHY, TO ABSORB THE MEDIUMS' HISTORICAL BACKGROUND, AND TO UNDERSTAND HOW PHOTOGRAPHY EVENTUALLY DEVELOPED INTO A MODERN ART FORM.
